AUSTRALIA REFORMING PACKAGING & SINGLE-USE PROBLEMATIC PLASTIC LEGILATIONS

AUSTRALIA'S REFORMING PACKAGING REGULATIONS

Updated: August 2024

On March 4, 2021, the Australian Government released a National Plastics Plan outlining the immediate and long-term actions required, to work towards reducing Australia’s plastics problem.

The plan highlighted several overarching goals[1] and key actions required to the achieve them. The Plan aimed to accelerate Australia’s progress in achieving APCO’s Towards 2025 National Packaging Targets.

However, in October 2022 Australia’s Environment Ministers agreed to and currently in consolation and development of an overarching mandatory ‘Requirements for Packaging’ [2] under the Federal Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020 (RAWR Act) that will replace the current Toward 2025 APCO co-regulatory arrangement by the end of 2025.

The RAWR Act and mandatory packaging requirements will provide regulatory certainty and national consistency across the industry.

The mandatory design requirements will come into effect under the new regulatory scheme that will be in place by the end of 2025.
